Question…Why do we use
Styrofoam (polystyrene) trays?
2.
Question…Why don’t we use
biodegradable trays?
-
Biodegradable trays are much more costly.
In a compost pile, they would biodegrade. Few commercial compost sites
exist due to the smell. But in a landfill materials are covered to
prevent air, water, and light to degrade the materials so the materials will
not leach into our water supply. So in actuality, the materials are
mummified.

All of the School District’s garbage goes to
an incinerator.
-
Fortunately for us we have a state of the art
Waste to Energy Plant in Buckingham. As a hydrocarbon product,
polystyrene’s high BTU value (more than 17,000 BTU/pound) helps maintain
high burning temperatures necessary in an incinerator for proper combustion
of other garbage creating less ash to be sent to a landfill. Burning
polystyrene in a modern incinerator results in end products of carbon
dioxide, water vapor, and a trace of ash. The energy generated from
the plant is converted to electricity to power our home air conditioners,
appliances, hospitals, street lights, etc. Burning polystyrene for
energy production creates a smaller environmental footprint than oil and
coal and about the same as gas.
